MEDREG: Building a common energy future in the Mediterranean through regulatory cooperation


For thousands of years the Mediterranean
Sea has been a major crossroads for transport trade and cultural exchange
connecting diverse people encompassing three continents: Western Asia North
Africa and southern Europe Known for its mild weather, home to
countless marine species and rich vegetation the Mediterranean region
offers an ever-changing landscape cradle of civilization the Mediterranean
has been shaped by trade since ancient times, and remains a vibrant economic
space today the region has an high potential as a
provider or renewable electricity and natural gas and has a strategic
geographical position to facilitate transit from the region and beyond. With the aim to foster secure sustainable and affordable energy, MEDREG acts as a
collaborative platform where 28 energy regulators from the Mediterranean Basin cooperate to share regulatory best practices and support each other
MEDREG works toward the creation of an integrated Euro-Mediterranean energy
market which will contribute to achieve stability prosperity and social
welfare in the region based on a bottom-up approach as well as on an evolving and personalized support to its members, MEDREG has demonstrated its capacity to effectively strengthen energy regulation at national level. It
has become a well recognized partner in the region that continues to attract new
members such as Lebanon and Mauritania which joined in 2019. Recently we helped
the creation of an independent gas regulator in Egypt we advised Tunisia on
cross-border interconnection we worked with Jordan to improve the efficiency of
its electricity market we facilitated the implementation of Algeria’s
renewable energy strategy we advised Palestine on net metering and supported
Israel to connect gas to its household consumers. While differences remain
between national markets energy regulators which cooperate within
MEDREG are shaping fair and effective regulation laying the ground for
economic and social development and a bright common energy future for the
