Agent of Change – Jacek Jasieniak, Printable Solar Panels

– Our current solar panels
just won’t be able to meet our future energy needs sustainably. And we need to change it. Current solar cells are
made out of silicon. They take a lot of energy to fabricate. We’re working on a class of
materials called perovskites. What they are particularly
good at is absorbing light and converting that
light into electricity. Having these properties in one material has really been an anomaly. It’s never been found. Especially for materials
that can be printed. Printed solar cells will allow us to laminate solar cells on to a roof. The roof will be a solar cell. What we’re trying to do is make, not only very efficient
solar cell devices, but devices that also
have different forms. Such as transparency. When I look at a city skyline, every one of those windows
is covered by coating that effectively blocks out light. Now what if we could change those coatings to convert that light to electricity? We’re trying to develop
those technologies now.
